As of late iv'e been using adobe image ready to make avatars and things like that. But I usually have no idea what the average size of one is.So I just take other images and copy those mesurements.Which doesn't take any real skill. However,im open to some suggestions as to what I can do to size images better and make them look good in the process.Like for starters what type of software would you recomend I use to make better av's?

Photoshop is obviously the best but it is expensive. My trial ran out so I'm kind of screwed there.

Iv'e used photoshop before, and its really good. But I think I could use a refresher in learning how to use it.So I thought of getting a book on it that might help.Or maybe there might be some place online that has simple tutorials. But in place of that iv'e been using GIMP,which is the poor mans photoshop.Though I don't find it any easier to use.
